Torres Attacks the Top 5

Sunday, 3 April 2016 15:21 GMT

Best result of the year for Spanish BMW rider at home in Aragón

The Althea BMW rider recovered quickly from a tough start and was up to P8 by the third lap, before progressing even further by mid race and gaining another two positions.

Thanks to a good race rhythm, the Catalan rider managed to catch Flying Dutchman Michael van der Mark by Lap 13 and gained fifth, a top 5 placement he managed to defend until the end of the race, marking his best result in WorldSBK since winning in Qatar in 2015 onboard different machinery. The improvement for the Althea rider wasn’t only marked in positions on track but also a reduced gap to the front compared to Race 1.

“I needed a good result here, because racing at home means your whole family comes to support you so it was important,” explained Torres. “I’m very happy, it was a race characterized by a comeback just like yesterday, but this time it was much more stable and I knew much more about what the bike was going to do. I knew I had to save more rear tyre and I had to change my riding to support the front more, and that helped me enjoy the race.”

Spanish Elvis, as Torres was dubbed by rival Tom Sykes, began the day on slightly the wrong foot after a crash in the Warm Up session, but the day improved from then on.

“This morning we changed a lot thinking they were going to give us big improvements but actually we realized they were a bad idea. That’s what happened really, I went wide and ended up in the gravel, but I think this year calls for some trial and error and that’s starting to show in the results. It’s true that we’re still far from the Ducati of Davies and from KRT, but we’re closer to Yamaha and Honda. We’re getting there but we have to get there as quickly as possible.”

Torres leaves Aragón in sixth position in the Championship with 53 points, the same as Sylvain Guintoli and 3 behind the next rival up the road: Ducati rider Davide Giugliano.
